Perth’s airport tunnel could promote the local economy significantly on its completion.
The tunnel is now scheduled for completion by 2020, and will connect to the Midland line in Bayswater. Three stations at Redcliffe, Airport Central and Forrestfield will be opened when the time comes. The project will cost around $1.8bn and should enable swift access from the airport to the centre of the city. Demand for suburban printing services may increase as the economy heats up. Premier Mark McGowan told PerthNow:
“There's around two thousand people working on this project. Some of them are apprentices and trainees. This project will help the pathway for Perth to becoming a world city when we link our airport onto the rail network.”
At present, machines are working to bore the necessary tunnels, and progress averages out at 26 metres per day. The project has over six kilometres left to go. A substantial amount of soil, clay and rock has already been shifted as the machines have moved about three kilometres towards the goal.
The initiative also involves the relocation of Dundas Road. A station will be constructed at the airport, and nearly 7,000 houses will be built as a result of the scheme. The motorist will also be catered for as two new multistorey carparks will be built as part of the infrastructure upgrade.
