Rebuilding the long established Frankston train station will be at the crux of a major design competition in 2016.
The station, which has often featured on local Postcards as a place of interest, has been servicing the local area on the line through Seaford, Victoria since the late 1800s.
In August last year, the Frankston Station Precinct Taskforce recommendations for the $63m project were tabled, leading to the latest plan to launch a design contest later in the year.
Frankston MP Paul Edbrooke who is chairman of the Taskforce said submissions would be sought from major architectural companies with a view to finding the best design possible for Frankston’s railway station redevelopment.
He said the designs would need to be appropriate to match Frankston’s status as a leading tourism destination and major activity centre.
Guidelines for the redevelopment are currently being worked on by the Office of the Victorian Government Architect, according to Mr. Edbrooke, who said the ultimate aim was to achieve the best outcome for the local community of the City of Frankston.
Improvements to Young Street have been included in the project, with works expected to begin in May this year, according to Edbrooke.
Mayor James Dooley said all Signs that work on the railway station redevelopment and the Young Street improvements were imminent were welcomed by residents who were keen to see the project become a reality.
