Five Frankston station reconstruction design finalists selected

Seaford, Victoria residents who regularly use the rail service at nearby Frankston are a step closer to experiencing the services of a new, state-of-the-art train station.

A competition seeking the submission of ideas for the precinct, complete with graphic designs by 39 applicants has just been shortlisted to five concept planners including architects from Luke Farrugia and Andrew Shaper, Supermanouvre, Cullinan Ivanov, Genton and Grimshaw.

The five firms were selected by a panel that was chaired by Jill Garner, a Victorian Government architect.

She said all architects will now combine their talents with experts to come up with a detailed design concept for the new station.

Garner said following this process, an overall winner of the design competition will be revealed in March with work on the project expected to begin late in 2017.

She said the key to a winning design will be its effectiveness in working well with Frankston’s existing network.

The submissions, she added, are all quite distinct from one another.

At a recent meeting between the five finalists, Frankston State Labour MP Paul Edbrooke and Public Transport Minister Jacinta Allan at Frankston’s Revitalisation Hub, Allan spoke glowingly about the new station, predicting it will be much bigger and better in terms of aesthetic and operational appeal.

She added the station reconstruction is a major part of the $63m Frankston rail precinct transformation and residents are able to take a look at the five designs personally at the Frankston Project Hub, Frankston.
