Seaford, Victoria residents could notice increased patronage of local stores and cafes in the main Frankston shopping area following the recent arrival of 700 staff to man the new headquarters of South East Water (SEW).
According to Karin Hann, the executive officer of the Greater Frankston Business Chamber, the recent arrival of SEW staff had an overwhelmingly positive impact on businesses in the area.
She said the increased trade was being experienced in everything from retail, cafes and restaurants, to trades such as those offering printing services for everything from Stationery and Business Cards, to full colour Brochures and Signs.
Hann said, as an added economic bonus, some SEW staff had also become homeowners in the city.
Mayor James Dooley said the extra people in the CBD helped boost the local economy.
Gabe North, Manager of Bayside Shopping Centre, said sales in the complex had experienced a positive impact since the SEW office opened.
He said the increase had been most evident in the takeaway food market, which had increased by an estimated 12% on the same period last year.
Retailers are confident this upward trend will continue throughout the festive season, North added.
According to Kevin Hutchings, SEW managing director, the authority and its staff have been delighted with how local business has supported them during their first few months in Frankston.
The project is scheduled for completion by the middle of next year.
