Australian Paper loses its FSC certification

Australian Paper has seen its flagship brand Reflex lose its official Forest Stewardship Council (FSC). It is alleged that Reflex withdrew its request to get the FSC to certify the timber it uses from VicForests – a Victorian State Government run organisation that logs native forest for commercial use.

However, general manager for corporate social responsibility at Australian Paper, Shaun Scallan said that the Reflex brand still has the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC) as well as the Australian Forestry Standard (AFS).

Yet environmentalists are still not convinced of this latest move by Australian Paper with Sarah Rees from environmental group My Environment Inc, saying of the logging practices of VicForests:

"Native forest woodchips from Victoria are poison when it comes to gaining Forest Stewardship Certification, because Victoria's native forest logging practices are an international disgrace and completely unsustainable."

This latest development follows a tumultuous month for Australian Paper who recently announced they would be raising their prices by 5% due to 'ongoing rising labour costs and increase in raw material, including energy and oil'.

Wayne Stanistreet, general manager of sales and marketing said:

"Paper prices have been on a downward trend for some time, though at the same time, our costs have been rising.

"We need to take some action. At this stage the increase will only affect the products that we sell under our offset range of papers, though we are constantly reviewing the entire suite of papers we produce.”

He concluded.

Australian Paper is the major supplier to Print companies across the country from Seaford to Sydney.
