Artistic ingenuity has ignited bustling Greville Street in Prahran, Victoria.
As part of the 2011-15 Arts and Cultural Strategy for the City of Stonnington, visual artists Ambrose Rehorek and Chanel Tang, of Creature Creature, have created a ‘Wind Guardians’ paste up that extends 30 metres.
The unique artwork, which has been skilfully applied to manoeuvre around a doorway, encompasses hundreds of hand-cut paper scales that have been sprayed and then pasted onto the art space.
The mural faces towards the Prahran Town Hall and has been described as a protector of the space but, according to a council spokesman, it represents the beginning of a broader streetscape planned for King and Greville Streets.
He said the project was being undertaken in consultation with traders, residents and other stakeholders with whom workshops had already been held.
The aim of the Greville Street Improvement Plan, according to the spokesman, was to create an attractive, welcoming streetscape where residents and visitors could gather and meet.
He said the plan was to enhance connections between King Street, Prahran Town Hall, Prahran Railway Station and Chapel Street by providing an artistic touch to King Street, St Edmonds Road, Izett Street intersection, Grattan Gardens square, the Prahran Town Hall forecourt and Greville Street.
Murals, such as the Wind Guardians in Greville Street, have often been the subject of local promotional efforts such as postcard printing.
