Victorian government spending big on new parklands for Melbourne suburbs

Melburnians will soon be able to enjoy more parks and green spaces thanks to funding from the Victorian state government.

The government will invest $154 million, which is to be spent on the creation of new park areas across Melbourne in response to the needs of a growing population and an increase in high density living.

The funding is expected to create 6,500 hectares of new parks, which will include walking and cycle pathways and dog parks. Additionally, 25 pocket parks are to be created within inner city suburbs such as Prahran, to create a greener environment and allow residents to have access to a greater number of recreational areas.

Existing parks will receive upgrades to their current infrastructure with extra cycle ways and playgrounds to be made available for children. Public spaces often utilise graphic design as well as signage to advise visitors of the facilities that are available.

Minister for Environment, Lily D’Ambrosia said that the increase in parklands across the city would-re-reinstate Victoria’s reputation as the Garden State of Australia, commenting:

“Melbourne is already one of the world’s most liveable cities and we’re ensuring future generations in these growing suburbs have access to open, green space.”

D’Ambrosia explained that it will be an opportunity to give families more access to open green spaces where they can relax and unwind.
