History fans in Prahran who are familiar with French history might be keen to dine out in luxury for Bastille Day.
Bastille Day refers to the historical date on which the Storming of the Bastille on 14th July 1789 is celebrated. This was a main event during the French Revolution. Celebrations are held throughout France, where it is a national holiday.
When the crowd stormed the Bastille on 14th July 1789, they were reinforced by turncoat French Guards, so the Governor of the prison opened the gates to try and avoid a massacre. As a consequence, on 26th August, the Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen was drawn up, which is a civil rights document, inspired by the Enlightment and which later became the basis for a nation of free individuals with equal protection by the law.
The Bastille Day Dinner will be candlelit with a collection of 18th-century French antiques. Menu items will include traditional French fare such as Oysters Minoiette and Boeuf Bourguignon, accompanied by considered wine pairings.
