It is billed as one of the greatest plays of the twentieth century. Death of a Salesman was written by Arthur Miller in 1949, winning the Pulitzer Prize for Drama and the Tony Award for Best Play when it first came to the stage on Broadway.
The play is a tragedy set in Brooklyn in the 1940s, told through the eyes of the main character, Willy Loman, a travelling salesman. Loman is unhappy with his lot; the play addresses themes such truth, infidelity and The American Dream. The production has been revived many times, playing all around the world, and has also been adapted for the cinema. Venues showcasing plays and dramas such as this often make use of poster printing to advertise to potential theatre fans.
In this version of the classic, the intimate setting of Chapel Off Chapel hosts Paul English as Willy Loman. Theatre People states:
“It can’t be overstated how phenomenal the cast is.”
While drama critic John Lahr has called it:
“Probably the most successful modern play ever published.”
Death of a Salesman is playing at Chapel Off Chapel, located 12 Little Chapel Street, Prahran, VIC 3181, from Thursday 8th June until Sunday 11th June, inclusive. Tickets cost from $25 and evening performances start at 7:30pm. The play lasts three hours and includes a twenty-minute interval.
