The proposed cycle route passes through the iconic Prahran shopping strip. The concept involved a bike lane running beside the tram line, as a means of avoiding the issue of cyclists colliding with opening car doors.
Almost half of all reported bike collisions on Chapel Street during the past four years were caused by doors. The narrow street is often congested, something which isn’t helped by the slow moving trams and street parking situation.
The government had previously pledged $275,000 toward the bike lane project, which has now hit a brick wall. The Council has now called for further consultation, significantly delaying the forecast of completion by years end.
Yarra Trams is also concerned that the design will encourage people to ride dangerously close to the trams. Clem Newton-Brown, Prahran’s Liberal MP, is hoping the stalemate can be resolved soon. He said:
“The community of Stonnington and Prahran is expecting these works to be done to improve cycling in our area and it can’t be done without the support of council.”
The Chapel Street scenario is extremely challenging as it is a very narrow street but it has to accommodate trams, cars and cyclists. The Council is continuing to investigate alternatives and is hoping to settle on a safe outcome for all road users.
Creation and presentation of ideas and design concepts are best facilitated by utilising the services of Prahran printing companies, something the Council does often.
