Tennis’s first grand slam event for 2015 to be held in Melbourne, Victoria, has attracted one of the strongest line-ups ever assembled in the history of the tournament.
The CEO of Tennis Australia, Craig Tiley, said 99 of the top 100 female players and all of the world’s 100 best male players would be contesting this year’s coveted Australian Open. Czech Republic’s Petra Cetkovská, the 58th best, is the only woman from the top 100 to withdraw from the tournament, citing a hip injury.
The women’s draw, however, will see the return of Romina Oprandi, Bethanie Mattek-Sands and Vera Zvonareva, who is the former world No.2.
Meanwhile, the men’s competition will welcome back Janko Tipsarevic, who ended his 2014 season with a foot injury, and 2009 US Open champion Juan Martin del Potro, who is returning after wrist surgery.
Both the women’s and men’s draws will include eight wildcard entrants plus 12 female qualifiers and 16 men’s qualifiers.
Mr Tiley said Australian Open 2015 preparations were on track and the event was shaping up to be a fantastic experience for everyone involved, from players to spectators.
Brochure and flyer printers have been busy producing ticket booking information for all those wishing to attend the major annual event.
The 2015 Australian Open begins on January 19th at Melbourne Park.
