Heartbreak Hotel was written by New Zealand’s award-winning theatre company EKBM (Eleanor Bishop and Karin McCracken). The co-directors began the company in 2017, with their work centring on contemporary and social issues. They use consultations with audiences and academics and collaborations with performers and designers to create work that is both intelligent and challenging.
In Heartbroken Hotel, Karin McCracken examines the science of heartache, drawing on personal anecdotes, hard-hitting breakup anthems and famous novels. It is funny, honest and though-provoking and has been praised wherever it has played.
Heartbreak Hotel is travelling this year, heading to off-Broadway, and then touring in New Zealand, Canada and Australia. It was well-received at the Edinburgh Fringe in 2025, where a review in The Scotsman enthused:
“I defy even the coldest cynic to resist the aching charm of this unapologetically tender two-hander. Hijacks your nervous system and fast-tracks its way into your soul.”

Heartbreak Hotel is showing from Tuesday 14th July until Sunday 19th July, at various times. The venue is the Arts Centre, Fairfax Studio, 100 St Kilda Road, Southbank 3006. Tickets cost from $64 and the musical is suitable for those aged twelve and over.
