History fans in Melbourne Southbank can enjoy an evening in the company of a lively British historian who is a familiar face on television.
Mary Beard is a popular historian and classicist and she will be discussing the content of her latest book, Talking Classics: The Shock of the Old, with specially selected guest hosts.
As a convivial guest, she also invites members of the audience to ask questions, as she enjoys providing engaging and entertaining answers. Copies of the book will be available to buy, and Beard will be staying on after the talk to sign them.
Beard was Cambridge University-educated in the UK and regularly contributes to radio and television programmes. She also writes a blog called A Don’s Life, as part of her role as classics editor of The Time Literary Supplement. As a specialist in Ancient Rome, she is often referred to as “Britain’s best-known classicist” and has been described by The New Yorker as “learned but accessible”.
