Lovers of the Bard (also known as William Shakespeare) in the Melbourne Southbank area may be keen to see a new imagining of the play Julius Caesar, produced by the Bell Shakespeare theatre company.
The original plot revolves around an assignation attempt on Caesar to stop him from gaining too much power after his triumph in battle, and Caesar’s friend Brutus is persuaded to help. Caesar’s protégé, Mark Anthony, stirs the crowd, and Brutus and the other conspirators have to flee.
Bell Shakespeare is a national theatre company that started in 1990 in a circus tent. The aim is to make Shakespeare accessible to everyone, as the themes are universal and timeless. Peter Evans is the artistic director who is responsible for this latest incarnation of the play, which is set in 1990s Eastern Europe, echoing the chaos after the Berlin Wall fell and Communism collapsed. Evans is also the set designer.
