Those living in Melbourne Southbank can catch one of the final performances of a popular jazz band as part of the Melbourne International Jazz Festival.
The Bad Plus began in the year 2000, in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Originally a trio, the founding members were David King on drums, Reid Anderson on bass guitar and Ethan Iverson on piano.
Their 2003 LP release, These Are The Vistas, featured on NPR’s All Songs Considered as one of the 50 Most Important Recordings Of The Decade.
The current line-up now is a quartet, with original founders King and Anderson, plus tenor saxophonist Chris Speed and guitarist Ben Monder. The band’s sound could be described as avant-garde jazz, with rock and pop undertones. Along with original work, the band has covered songs by the likes of Nirvana, Blondie and David Bowie.
With critical acclaim and worldwide supporters, this farewell tour, to include the United States, Europe, Japan and Australia, will likely be a bittersweet finale for the band and fans alike.
