Winter is well on its way and the National Gallery of Victoria has developed several exhibitions designed not only to celebrate art but also to draw the crowds during the year’s coldest months.
In particular, the famous 1871 painting Arrangement in Grey and Black No.1—better known as Whistler’s Mother—by James McNeill Whistler is on loan from the Musée d’Orsay, Paris. The portrait is on display until the 19 June and is the centrepiece of this focused exhibition.
Another temporary exhibition for the winter months is the gallery’s 200 Years of Australian Fashion. Displaying more than 120 works from over 90 designers, it features pieces from artists such as Toni Maticevski and Dion Lee. The exhibition is a multimedia presentation featuring clothing, photographs, works on paper and video interviews.
As each year passes, the gallery experiences a record-breaking number of visitors and the trend does not seem to be stopping anytime soon. With almost 23 million people visiting the gallery in 2014–15, it has become one of Melbourne’s most popular attractions.
Visitor interaction is encouraged and the national gallery holds around 9,500 educational and public programs annually. However, sightseeing is not the only attraction at the Victorian National Gallery as the gift shop sells a range of products inspired by the collections including books, Catalogues, Postcards and Stationery.
