A new state-of-the-art gallery will transform the Melbourne arts precinct with a cantilever design spanning Southbank Boulevard, Kavanagh Street, and Sturt Street Reserve.
Melbourne City Council has recently looked at a master plan from Hassell and SO-IL for the first phase of the redevelopment proposed by Development Victoria. The redevelopment will comprise an elevated deck for an 18,000 square metre public space, NGV Gallery and back of house upgrades to the Arts Centre Melbourne’s theatres. A new gallery named NGV Contemporary gallery will replace the existing structure at 77 Southbank Boulevard.
The master plan states that the Melbourne Arts Precinct Transformation (MAPT) will allow easy access throughout the precinct for Melbourne Southbank and city visitors. The Arts precinct will extend from Federation Square in the north to Sturt Street in the south and will feature performance arts and activations in the outdoor public space to add to the enjoyment visitors gain from Melbourne’s indoor galleries and entertainment spaces. Geographic barriers have always interrupted movement throughout the area, but the plan hopes to overcome this with its unique design. Quality brochure printing can enhance the presentation of planning proposals.
The Council’s design and architecture team have given in-principle support for the project, although the plan is only referred to Melbourne City Council for comment before the Victoria planning minister makes the final decision.
