Solar panels set scorching record for iconic Melbourne buildings

Renewable energy has reached new heights with the recent installation of solar panels in two iconic buildings in Melbourne, Victoria.

The country’s fourth-tallest skyscraper, located at 101 Collins Street, is now home to a commercial solar panel system believed to be the highest in Australia.

Residentially, Russell Street’s boutique Hero Building has hit the record books after installing what has been described as the largest solar system ever introduced into a Melbourne apartment block years after it was established.

According to Melbourne Lord Mayor Robert Doyle, the 101 Collins Street retrofitting of the 59.4kW system is a major step forward in regard to the switch to solar.

He said prominent financial institutions from around the world occupied the blue chip building and they were sure to realise the benefits of such a good investment.

While homeowners from all corners of Australia were studying Brochures of information on solar energy, and many had already installed solar panels to make the most of the warm climate, Mayor Doyle said installing solar 195 metres up on a 56-storey rooftop took a great deal of engineering, design and installation skill.

Environment Portfolio Chairman Cr. Arron Wood said the move to install solar panels was applauded by council, and he hoped it would encourage other building owners to follow their lead.
