Rotarians set sights on Melbourne in 2023
Melbourne Southbank will set the scene for the staging of the 2023 Rotary International Convention.
To be held at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre (MCEC), the major event is expected to attract in excess of 20,000 Rotarians from around Australia and the world.
Martin Pakula, Minister for Tourism, Sport and Major Events, said Melbourne had secured the event over closest rival London. An inspection of the site by Rotary International key decision makers was carried out prior to the recent announcement of the successful destination.
Pakula said the convention was expected to deliver upward of $88 million into the state’s economy while also creating about 530 jobs.
Key pedestrian and transport links along Southbank Promenade and City Road will enable Rotarians to gain easy access to both Melbourne Park and the MCEC. Brochure printing services can be used to prepare guides for tourists.
According to Pakula, the MCEC’s recent expansion to include 20,000sqm more space for new multipurpose and exhibitions has increased its ability to host conventions of this size, adding:
Pakula estimated the state’s economy could be boosted by some $167 million annually as a result.
