This year was the first time that the Australian Print Finishers Association has supported the Collie Trust Award, which was previously supported by the Australian Print Workshop. The winner was an apprentice from Melbourne, Daniel Menkens, who received a $15,000 prize. According to Print21online, Daniel is the first Print finisher to win the Apprentice of the Year Collie Trust Award in 10 years.
In addition, Menkens won the Australian Print Finishers Association’s Apprentice of the Year award for Print Finishing last year. This year’s winner is from Gippsland Trade Printers - Marilyn May. May’s teacher, Phillip Barnes, reported that she took time to gain confidence, but soon surpassed her peers through her dedication. Each winner was awarded a cheque for $500 by Peter Johnston, the president of the Australian Print Finishers Association. He stated that fostering talent in the next Print finishers' generation is of huge importance within the printing services industry.
Johnston said the association:
“is delighted to be part of these important awards, which encourage excellence and recognise the achievements of apprentices and, it should be said, businesses like Signs Publishing Company and Gippsland Trade Printers who are prepared to support young people and the future of our industry by taking on apprentices.”
