Rising temperatures affecting agriculture across Australia

The recently released world weather report has suggested that 2013 could end up being one of the hottest years since records began in 1850.

According to Bureau of Meteorology climatologist Blair Trewin, Australia, which has been setting its own weather records throughout the year, has contributed significantly to the report’s overall results.

The implications of higher temperatures, and in some cases less rainfall, will lead to a requirement for more forward planning for many, according to Snow Barlow, a professor of agriculture at Melbourne University.

It will also lead to changes in land use in Australia as prime areas for farming activities such as viticulture move further south into Tasmania, for example. Fortunately, Australian winegrowers are already thinking ahead and Professor Barlow said that between 70 and 80 per cent of winegrowers have accepted that global climate change is happening and many are thinking about what it means for their businesses.

Experts have said that hotter temperatures will lead to the need for the smarter use of natural resources, such as water. A commitment to sustainability in the industry is already championed with a programme called Entwine Australia from the Winemakers’ Federation of Australia (WFA).

The WFA is the industry body for winegrowers and producers. Environmental and commercial outcomes are achievable with the Entwine programme, and results can include money being saved and the more efficient use of water and energy.

The next general meeting of the WFA is set to be held in Adelaide on Tuesday. This will be a great networking opportunity and attendees will no doubt make use of business card printing services beforehand.
