What's Happening in Southbank, VIC…

Rise in street art popularity continues

John Albrecht, the head of art auctions at Melbourne auction house Leonard Joel, told the Sydney Morning Herald this month that he is making plans to auction the best examples of street art in Melbourne every year. The auctioneers have lone experience in fine art, jewellery, and antiques. Albrecht feels that there are reasons to be optimistic about the future of street art, with a major collection going under the hammer in Sydney in August.

Paintings sprayed on buildings by young artists are becoming increasingly commonplace. There are even individual graffiti artists and collectives that have become household names over the past twenty to thirty years.

As a picture of a parachuting rat painted by British street artist Banksy was recently accidentally destroyed by a Melbourne builder, it seems that people are beginning to explore the possibility of preserving street art in more conventional formats. Banksy is selling his art for large sums in galleries and there are plenty of spray paint artists ready to follow suit.

Artists will, of course be looking at media such as oil on canvas or watercolours on paper to make the move from the street to the gallery. While it may be a while before print companies are churning out reproductions of the works of Banksy and others, outdoor posters featuring samples of the artists’ works will be very effective in drawing crowds to the galleries. Postcards and brochure printing would also play major roles in promoting such events.
