Party hats on for Melbournes big birthday bash

A re-enactment of Melbourne’s first settlers arriving on the topsail schooner Enterprize in 1835, together with a Regatta sail-past and blessing of the Fleet, will be highlights of this year’s 179th birthday celebrations.

Each year, Melbourne, Victoria, presents a major program of events and activities to be enjoyed by all ages as it celebrates the city’s European foundation.

Lord Mayor Robert Doyle will kick off the festivities with a Melbourne flag-raising ceremony at Enterprize Park which, located on the Yarra River’s north bank, marks the landing place of the first settlers. He will be joined by Campbell Walker, who is Melbourne Day Chairman, plus VIPs and other dignitaries.

The day will be filled with events and activities, including a free concert at Federation Square from midday and the launch of the Australian Red Cross in the Great War exhibition and lecture. For the first time, the humanitarian organisation will also host a Flagstaff Gardens tour.

Families will be able to jump aboard sailing vessels and be part of the spectacular flotilla at Dockland’s Victoria Harbour. Short harbour trips or longer cruises to see the big ships in the ports will also be available.

Businesses throughout the city will also be taking part by offering special Melbourne Day discounts and showcasing products made in the city. The business community also unites for a special Lord Mayor’s Oration lunch.

Printing companies have been kept busy producing promotional Flyers and Brochures about the event, which will be held on August 30th.
