A new Melbourne Southbank studio has opened for community broadcaster Channel 31. The opening follows a three-year campaign by community supporters to extend the three-year broadcast licence.
A diverse range of groups and individuals pulled together to gain an extension to the broadcast licence. Cultural groups, political groups and individuals all worked together to ensure the campaign's success. According to Southbank News, Channel 31 management and staff have stated that they are delighted at the opening of the new studio and are very grateful to the local community, whose support enabled the station to continue broadcasting.
Melbourne city councillors toured the new Channel 31 facility on Douglas Street. Councillors commented on how important it was to have a community station like Channel 31 that told local Melbourne stories generally not heard by the public. Mayor Sally Capp said it was gratifying to employees and volunteers to see the value placed on the station by the local community.
The station’s staff varies between around 13 to 15 people, along with volunteers, and it has been instrumental in providing experience and training to many budding broadcasters on both sides of the camera. Well-known TV personalities such as Andy Lee and Hamish Blake had their first experience of on-camera work at Channel 31.
The new Channel 31 studios are at 2-4 Douglas Street, Melbourne Southbank, part of the Montague Precinct of Fishermans Bend.
