What's Happening in Southbank, VIC…

Music to please all interests in Melbourne

Lovers of music with an orchestral flavour in the Melbourne, Southbank area may be keen to buy tickets for the one-night-only event of Mo’Ju with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra in March. Often, flyer printing is the means by which local audiences are attracted to one-off musical events such as this.

Mo’Ju (Mojo Ruiz de Luzuriaga) was born in New South Wales to a Filipino father and a mother of mixed Wiradjuri and European heritage. They are best known for their album ‘Native Tongue’ from five years ago, which went on to win the Best Independent Single in the 2019 AIR Awards. They grew up with music, playing piano as a youngster and then learning to play the guitar. Growing up feeling like an outsider fed into the roots of the music as an exploration of cultural identity and Mo’Ju has said:

“Traditions are really important and family histories give you an insight into your own identity. Songwriting is a huge part of keeping those oral traditions alive.”

The latest album ‘Oro, Plata, Mata’ is due out in March, from which the latest single, ‘Change Has to Come’, was released in November 2022.

Mo’Ju and the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra will perform at the Hamer Hall Arts Centre, 100 St Kilda Road, Melbourne, on Friday, March 23. Doors open at 18:45. Tickets cost from $55.
