Melbourne Southbank residents to learn ballet skills online
The Australian Ballet has developed a series of online ballet classes for adults of all dancing abilities to keep people moving and enable new skills to be learnt from home.
Ballet classes for adults are usually held at the Primrose Potter Australian Ballet Centre in Melbourne’s Southbank but due to current restrictions, these classes cannot be held in the centre.
The online classes are taught by Justine Miles, who once danced for the Australian Ballet, and are suitable for those with advanced ballet skills right through to intermediate and beginner dancers. The beginner classes are perfect for those who wish to dance but have had no ballet experience and these classes begin with targeted exercises to strengthen posture.
Intermediate classes are for dancers ready to begin working on their technique and will demonstrate correct ballet positions while further developing strength, while advanced classes are for those experienced dancers who have mastered correct ballet technique.
The classes are designed for people to complete at home in smaller spaces but ideally dancers would have at least two square meters in which to dance and a floor that is not slippery.
Each class takes around 60 minutes and once purchased, the lesson is available to play unlimited times for the next seven days. Each Tuesday, a new lesson will become available on the website. Classes cost $25 each and sample lessons are available on the Australian Ballet website to help dancers who are unsure of which level would be best suited to their abilities.
For those who do not wish to dance but would like to support the Australian Ballet during this time, various promotional products are available for sale on its website.
