Melbourne Southbank potential site for retired submarine

Melbourne City Council has expressed interest in hosting a decommissioned Collins class submarine as a possible tourist attraction for the Melbourne Southbank area.

While still a distant prospect, as the next generation of submarines is not scheduled to be commissioned until the 2030s, the idea is being considered based on the success of similar attractions around the world.

Lord Mayor Sally Capp told the Herald Sun if the plan were to go ahead, it would require some effort and need a solid business case but it could be an interesting reflection of the city’s history. She said:

“Melbourne has a long and fascinating maritime history. We’re always looking for ways to better connect the Yarra to the city and bring more visitors to the area.”

State Opposition Tourism Minister Heidi Victoria remarked a top tourist destination in New York City is the retired USS Growler submarine moored on the Hudson River. Sydney and Fremantle also have decommissioned vessels as a draw for visitors. Tourist attractions are often advertised with the assistance of banner printing and brochure printing services.

The Collins class of submarine originally drew criticism for performance issues. However, according to former Federal Defence Minister Brendan Nelson, it would be a positive to have one on public display. He commented the submarines had seen engagements in many conflicts but their successes were mostly classified.
