Melbourne set to host countrys top marathon
Entries are being called for Australia’s biggest marathon to be run in Melbourne, Victoria.
Last year, the 42.2km Melbourne Marathon, which offers a first place prize of $15,000, attracted record entries of 8066 – almost 2,000 more than the previous year and four times the inaugural event entries in 1978.
Participants can chose to compete in the main marathon or one of four accompanying events – the 3km walk, 5.7km run, 10km Coffee Club run, or Flight Centre Half Marathon.
In excess of 35,000 people are expected to take part in this year’s festival.
Entrants will be striving to improve upon the 2013 race records of two hours, 26 minutes and five seconds set by Lisa Weightman (Australia) in the Women’s section, and two hours, 10 minutes and 47 seconds by Dominic Ondoro (Kenya) in the Men’s.
All marathon competitors will receive a race bib with timing chip, race information booklet, T-shirt, show bag, gift, Finishers E- certificate, and medal.
All starters will kick off from Batman Avenue, 150m north of Rod Laver Arena, at 7am on October 12th.
As part of the Melbourne Marathon Festival, the Active Feet Runners Expo will be held from October 9th to 12th at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.
Program and flyer printing will provide more detailed information for entrants and visitors who attend the event, which organisers say would also be an ideal fundraiser for charity.
