Melbourne flips over Guinness World Record attempt

Melbourne, Victoria, is vying to become the pancake flipping capital of the world.

Organisers of the Pancake Parlour Shrove Tuesday celebrations are seeking 1,000 locals, friends and family members to join them in an attempt to break the Guinness World Record for tossing pancakes. This would break the current record, which involved 890 people flipping a pancake for 30 seconds simultaneously and was set in England.

The annual festivities will also include popular events such as the Ladies Pancake Tossing Race, in which participants wearing aprons over their skirts toss a pancake while racing along a 380m track.

Adding to the fun on the day will be the return of Melbourne’s Hungry Haydo, alias Hayden Wilson, who last year took 17 minutes and 26 seconds to devour 80 pancakes. While there is no Guinness World Record set for eating pancakes, the previous closest unofficial attempt stands at 73.

The Pancake Parlour’s Shrove Tuesday festivities, images from which are often the subject of postcard printing promotions, are enjoyed by all ages, with in excess of 8,000 pancakes cooked and served in combination with such treats as Jamaican banana, strawberries, maple syrup, ice cream and Barramundi fillets.

Pancake flippers of all ages are encouraged to take part in the event, which will be held on March 1 at Flagstaff Gardens with registrations beginning at 9:00 am for an 11:00 am start.
