Makeover likely for Melbournes scaffolding

Melbourne’s city council is aiming to improve the aesthetics of local construction work.

The idea is that artists can improve the appearance of scaffolding, hoardings and fencing. Urban planners and heritage enthusiasts agree that the building work should not detract so much from the way the city looks going forward. If the initiative is successful, postcards of Melbourne in the future may bear even more attractive photographs than they do today.

Rohan Lippert, a councillor with responsibility for heritage, said:

"Rather than having black or chicken-wire blank walls in the city, we will see developers drawing from a beautiful set of colourful designs created by a Melbourne artist."

Melbourne City Council (MCC) aspires to play a significant role in the scheme. The vision is that the authority will set out minimum design standards. The actual work will be performed by artists commissioned by the Council, with the hope that a single theme can be arrived at. This will connect the separate sites and deliver a special experience to citizens as they move from place to place.

Sydney has already implemented a strategy to ensure that construction does not impact adversely on its appearance. However, the new policy will not apply to everywhere in Melbourne as some of the building work being delivered by developers is being regulated by the government of the state.
