One of the most well-known musicals of all time, Rent, is set to visit the stage of the Arts Centre in Melbourne, which is well-placed for fans in Melbourne Southbank and the vicinity.
Rent the musical was written by Jonathan Larson, and is based on the opera La Boheme. It concerns a group of friends and artists, and is set in the late 1980s and early 1990s in the East Village of Manhattan, amidst a backdrop of HIV and AIDS, political turmoil and social tension. With no money and other hardships to endure, there is a sense of personal epiphany, and discovering what really matters in life.

The musical opened originally at the Nederlander Theatre in 1996, winning many awards, including a Tony’s for Best Musical and Best Original Score, and a Pulitzer Prize for Drama. Of all the music featured, one of the best-loved pieces is Seasons of Love, which tells the story of measuring a human year in love, rather than time.
