The new year has begun in style with the opening of the hit musical ‘Grease’ at Her Majesty’s Theatre in Melbourne.
Starring the effervescent Rob Mills in the role of Danny, made famous by John Travolta in the movie version, the multi-million-dollar production has already thrilled audiences in Brisbane and Sydney.
Mills is no newcomer to the Grease phenomena, having been cast as Johnny Casino in the 2005 ‘Grease – The Arena’ production alongside Craig McLachlan, John Farnham and Human Nature’s Toby Allen.
He also played Fiyero in ‘Wicked’ and Warner Huntington III in ‘Legally Blonde’, with both shows seen by Sydney and Melbourne audiences.
The cast reads like a who’s who of top Australian performers. Stepping into Olivia Newton John’s shoes as Sandy is up-and-coming artist Gretel Scarlett in her first starring role, while veteran television host Bert Newton plays disc jockey Vince Fontaine.
Dancing with the Stars judge Todd McKenney is the Teen Angel, while Anthony Callea takes on the role of Rydell High’s all-American rock star student Johnny Casino.
The stage production of Grease, which is likely to call for brochure and poster printing across the city, not only presents great performances but also all the hits and music that made it one of the most popular party musicals of all time, including ‘Grease is the World’, ‘You're The One That I Want’, ‘Sandy’, ‘Summer Nights’, ‘Greased Lightnin’’, and the huge hit ‘Hopelessly Devoted To You’.
Shows began on January 2 and continue until February 2.
