An exhibition based on cultural icon and world-acclaimed performer David Bowie is expected to boost the Victorian economy by millions of dollars, when it arrives on Australian soil for the 2015 Melbourne Winter Masterpiece series.
The same exhibition attracted hundreds of thousands to the Victoria and Albert Museum in London last year, including 67,000 advanced ticket sales.
Among the more than 300 items on show in the David Bowie Is exhibition will be the Alexander McQueen and Bowie-designed Union Jack waistcoat, and costumes such as his Ziggy Stardust bodysuits, plus handwritten lyrics to some of the singer’s biggest hits.
Fans will gain a personal insight into the star with personal exhibits, such as Bowie’s musical scores, sketches, and diary entries.
Special displays exploring Bowie’s influences as an actor, writer, stage performer, and musician will also be included.
Louise Asher, Tourism and Major Events Minister, said the exhibition was a major feature on Melbourne’s event calendar. She said the Victorian economy was expected to benefit by up to $6.8m by staging the exhibition.
Flyer, catalogue, and brochure printers will no doubt be kept busy spreading the word of the event, which is set to stir many memories for generations of Bowie fans across the nation, who still recall his classic songs such as Let’s Dance, Heroes, Rebel Rebel, and Space Oddity.
Tickets sales begin in November for the exhibition, which opens on July 16th, 2015.
