Tennis fans from across the nation will converge on Melbourne next month to see all the action on centre court in the 2014 Australian Open.
Former World No.1 Novak Djokovic will be defending his Australian Open Championship crown against high calibre rivals including Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer and Andy Murray, who was last year’s runner-up.
Djokovic is considered a hot favourite to secure the title for the fifth time in his career, despite his agonising 6-4, 3-6, 6-1, 6-7(3), 9-7 loss in four hours and 37 minutes against Rafael Nadal in the semi-finals at Roland Garros in June. Both players have performed well during 2013 and Djokovic maintains that an aggressive approach will be a key to his success in 2014.
Held in January each year, the tennis championships remain one of Australia’s most popular events and followers tend to book a year in advance to secure a good seat in the stands or corporate boxes. As a result, accommodation is at a premium and local restaurants and eating places do a roaring trade.
The Open, which will be held from January 13-26 at Melbourne Park and the Rod Laver Arena, attracts tens of thousands of tennis enthusiasts to the Victorian capital each year. The venue has a retractable roofing system which allows play to continue in rain, hail or shine.
International artists such as The Wiggles and Justin Timberlake have also performed at the venue, which has been featured on everything from television specials and sporting coverage to Flyers and postcard printing campaigns
