Creative minds to put pen to paper for biennial writing awards

Prize money of up to $6,000 is up for grabs in the 2015 ‘Lord Mayor’s Creative Writing Awards’ in Melbourne.

The awards aim to celebrate the city’s UNESCO City of Literature status while also recognising and encouraging new writers to make the most of their creative talents.

The Melbourne Library Service administers the awards which cover five categories including: Narrative non-fiction, Graphic Short Story, Novella, The Dorothy Porter Award for Emerging Poets, and Short Story. Each category within the awards has its own limit to which the writer can produce work.

Prizes of $1,000 will be awarded to each category winner and from these entrants the successful Lord Mayor’s $5,000 Award recipient will be named.

Entries opened in May and two hour writing workshops were held throughout June by leading local editors and writers.

Lisa Lang, author of EW Cole: Chasing the Rainbow and Utopian Man, conducted a workshop teaching techniques to develop memorable characters while speaker, writer and comedian, Catherine Deveny, taught her class how to turn the truth into a fascinating best seller.

Printing services are expected to be busy as writers prepare their hard copy entries for mailing to the Lord Mayor’s Creative Writing Awards 2015, Melbourne Library Service, GPO Box 1603, Melbourne 3001. Entries for the awards close on August 31.
