Classical quartets to be played in Melbourne Southbank

Popular string quartets by professional musicians will be gracing the stage in Melbourne Southbank next month.

Convergence is the name of the programme that the Australian String Quartet (ASQ) are performing around Australia. The ASQ is a chamber music ensemble that began in 1985 and is based in the University of Adelaide. The current members include Dale Barltrop and Francesca Hiew on violin, Michael Dahlenburg on cello and Chrisopher Cartlidge on viola.

They all play original instruments that were produced by Giovanni Battista in Italy in the middle of the 18th century.

The performance will include works by Schubert, Stanhope and Britten. The ASQ have previously championed Stanhope, the Australian composer, and on the evening, the audience will be listening to his rhythmical String Quartet No.1, Elegies and Dances.

Schubert’s popular String Quartet No.14 in D Minor, Death and the Maiden, will also be part of the programme, as will Benjamin Britten’s tribute to Henry Purcell, String Quartet No.2 in C Major, Op.36.

Musical events like this one are often advertised within a residential area by means of posters that can be produced at local print shops.

Convergence will be showing on Monday, 27 October, from 7 pm until 9 pm. The venue is the Melbourne Recital Centre, which can be found at 31 Sturt Street, Southbank. Tickets cost from $15.
