Melbourne Southbank is known for its cultural venues and growing public art spaces, and it now has a new piece of public art on Queensbridge Street, titled "Underpark".
Underpark is a unique art space that doubles as a basketball court. It was created by artist Reko Rennie and was commissioned by property developer and site owner Time & Place, alongside building firm Hickory. Rennie is well-known for his colourful and exciting style that celebrates his cultural identity and takes cues from graffiti art.
Time & Place hopes the art installation will encourage interested parties to register their support or ideas as a response to the City of Melbourne's plan for the urban regeneration of the Kings Way undercroft located nearby. It believes in the need to open a conversation about the space and encourages feedback and ideas.
For a limited time, Underpark will be free to use daily. Anyone wanting some exercise can make a free booking for a half-court, grab some friends and come down for a game. Visitors are welcome to come and watch the players and enjoy the installation and space.
Underpark is already popular on social media and is being seen regularly in Instagram posts.
Banner and poster printing can be useful when promoting installations like this.
The courts are open from 6am to 8pm every day. To see details and book a court, go to the Underpark website.
