Residents urged to nominate trees for special register

Residents of Caulfield and throughout the City of Glen Eira are being urged to nominate specific trees they believe should be included on the Classified Tree Register.

Nominations are now being accepted from people who are aware of a tree in a park, nature strip or garden that they think should be listed as one of the city's most important and valuable trees.

The register currently lists one tree that is gazetted and protected, with another three on the nominations list and additional trees set to be listed soon, subject to the expiration of waiting periods that allow landowners to be alerted to the specific trees nominated.

Trees boasting special significance have often been identified in history Books created by local printing services.

Mayor of Glen Eira Margaret Esakoff said there are countless social, economic and environmental benefits of trees, and she added:

“Not only do trees protect us against the urban heat island effect, reduce stormwater run-off, absorb air pollution and provide habitat for fauna, but they reduce wind speeds during storm events and absorb up to 150 kilograms of carbon dioxide per year.”

March 31 is the deadline for the first nomination round. Council arborists will then carefully assess each tree, with the most important and valuable assigned to the register. Once the trees have been assessed, further rounds will be conducted. Further information is available on the council's website.
