Plastic-free trial attracts growing support

A ‘plastic-free’ trial being undertaken by traders in Elsternwick, near Caulfield, is attracting growing support.

Businesses in Glenhuntly Road taking part in the trial, which seeks to do away with single-use plastics, now totals 18.

The trial, to run for six months from last October, is based around local businesses who have been asked to replace and reduce plastic single-use items with more environment-friendly, compostable or reusable alternatives.

There have been a number of initiatives introduced to remove some of the problem items such as disposable cutlery, lids and coffee cups. Among them is the use of the Returnr service, where single-use Packaging for takeaway meals is replaced with better reusable solutions.

The concept involves customers making a request and paying a modest deposit for a Returnr cup or bowl which is then required to be rinsed and returned to the outlet resulting in a refund of the deposit.

Another trial participant plans to have its compostable packaging and food waste disposed of at a facility that deals in commercial composting. Initiatives such as this are often promoted throughout the community using flyer printing.

The reduction of single-use plastics has been the topic of much media coverage across the country in recent years and Mayor Margaret Esakoff says:

“Change isn’t always easy, but if we work together we can achieve a sustainable future.”

She said results of the six-month trial are important because it can help Council assist local businesses to gain success in going plastic-free.
