Parents urged to attend reading event launch

The local launch of The Reading Hour will give residents from Caulfield and surrounding areas an opportunity to hear from popular multimedia personality and actress Magda Szubanski.

The Reading Hour, which is an annual, nationwide event, is held to encourage parents and their children to celebrate and experience the joy of reading together.

Glen Eira Mayor Neil Pilling said Szubanski was the event’s National Ambassador and the author of her memoirs ‘Reckoning’. The book has seen her win five awards including Australian Book Industry Book of the Year and Biography of the Year 2016, and the Nielsen BookData Booksellers Choice Award.

The beloved performer, he said, was also shortlisted for the 2016 National Biography Award, Dobbie Literary Award, and the Matt Richell Award for New Writer of the Year.

Mayor Pilling urged people within the local community to mark the event’s launch date of August 16 at the Elsternwick Library on their Calendars.

He said The Reading Hour raised the importance of reading in a child’s life and it was hoped the event will encourage more parents to spend at least 10 minutes throughout the day or night sharing a book with their children.

The launch, which has been promoted online and via Flyers, will also include some Australian stories and appearances by storybook characters, including Blinky Bill.
