The rail line will be elevated in order to enable traffic to flow better than it does now. The initiative is set to have an impact between Dandenong and Caulfield. Friction about the proposals could be limited by the envisaged property purchases, so full colour printing from local Print shops might be used to communicate with residents.
The minister for public transport, Jacinta Allan, told ABC Online:
"Many residents may decide that they don't want to participate in the voluntary purchase scheme and may want to instead put in place a range of landscaping and fencing initiatives, particularly given their back fences of many of these residences will open up on to open space.”
Allan explained that contingency plans were in place to cover the potential cost of buying houses from locals. She stressed that it was important that people were given choices in relation to their future living arrangements.
The idea is that the housing in question can be valued by independent people. If the individuals want to relocate, then some of the costs associated with moving will be met.
The infrastructure project, which should boost capacity between Pakenham and Cranbourne, is set to cost more than $1.5bn. Several level crossings will be removed if the initiative is implemented.
