On Saturday January 26th, Australia celebrates Australia Day to mark the anniversary of the first convict ships arriving from Britain and the Union Jack flag being raised.
Events will take place around the country and Caulfield residents can celebrate early with a special Australia Day breakfast on Friday January 25th. The breakfast, which is organised by Glen Eira City Council, will mark the anniversary and honour some of the area’s people.
The Glen Eira Citizen of the Year, Young Citizen of the Year for under-25s and Community Group of the Year will also be announced at the event. The awards are given to people and groups who have significantly contributed to the community. Recipients are nominated by other locals and must live in the municipality.
The guest speaker at the breakfast will be Dr Alan Finkel, Chancellor of Monash University and respected entrepreneur and philanthropist. Dr Finkel has been Chancellor since 2008 and is also president of the Australian Academy of Technological Science and Engineering, a group of engineers and scientists instrumental in promoting science in Australia.
The event will be a good opportunity for local business owners to start their networking for 2013 and business card printing can ensure that details are up to date for the new year.
The breakfast will be held at Glen Eira Town Hall between 7.30am and 9am. Tickets, which are $30 each, can be booked by calling the council’s service centre and must be booked by Friday January 18th.
