Female football on rise in Victoria

Gifted sports women from Caulfield and across Victoria will have increased opportunities to join the ranks of female footballers in 2018.

Victorian Amateur Football Association’s Brett Connell spoke highly about the impact women were having on the age-old competition and announced an additional 20 sides would be included next year.

Mr Connell said the move is expected to see this year’s tally of 35 clubs be boosted to 60 clubs taking part in the competition next year.

“If you had have told someone, even 10 years ago, that in the 125th year you will open your season with a female game under lights, people would have laughed at you.”

The VAFA boss applauded the work of VAFA’s women’s football development officer Shona MacInnes who he credited with making the inaugural year of the women’s competition a success.

He said that the attendance of people at the VAFA finals matches at this year’s season end was quite amazing.

Banner printing and the like can bring to the fore even more of Victoria’s women football clubs with those same Banners waving strongly for 2017 premierships winners which included Hawthorn, Mazenod, Old Camberwell, St. Mary’s Salesian and Marcellin.

New teams being fielded in the competition next year will include Westbourne Grammarians, Power House, Eley Park Sharks, Aquinas, Old Melburnians, Old Scotch and Melbourne Cricket Club.

The popularity of female football this year is reflected in the number of females who took part in football competitions and programmes, which reached in excess of 108,000.
