Cultural Feast to hit Glen Eira

Restaurants in Caulfield and Glen Eira will be putting their best meals on show for the 2013 Cultural Feast, next week.

During the event, restaurants and cafes will be presenting dishes from their home countries. The feast is part of the Victorian Multicultural Commission’s Cultural Diversity Week, which encourages people to celebrate other cultures and share their customs.

Census figures show that around a quarter of residents in the city of Glen Eira come from a country in which English is not the first language. Around 35 per cent were born overseas. The local restaurants reflect this diversity with Korean, Polish, and South American food readily available.

The participating restaurants will be offering special dishes and offers during the event and encouraging people to try dishes from different countries.

In Caulfield, residents can try pizza and traditional spaghetti bolognese at La Porchetta; a New York style sandwich called a Reuben, which includes Swiss cheese, pastrami and Russian dressing; and Australian salmon and a chocolate crepe recipe passed through generations at Mocha Green. Residents can also look out for poster printing advertising other special events, including live music.

Anyone who would like to try cooking for themselves can sign up for a cooking class at My Other Kitchen in nearby Bentleigh on Tuesday March 19th or Wednesday March 20th, where participants can learn to cook Indian or South American dishes.

The festivities will take place between Saturday March 16th and Sunday March 24th. For more information about the Cultural Feast, visit the Glen Eira council website.
