What's Happening in Broadmeadows, VIC…

Local environment the perfect place for a winning photo

The Christmas and New Year holiday period is a great time for keen photographers to get in some practice and Broadmeadows residents could even take a winning photo during the festive break.

Entries are currently open for the Hume in Focus competition run by Hume City Council, which covers Broadmeadows. This year's competition has five categories all related to the local area.

The categories are native animals, native plants, waterways and landscapes, sustainable living, and community interaction with the environment. There is no restriction on the type of photographs which can be entered, but the pictures must all be taken within the Hume area.

Broadmeadows Valley Park is a good location to find inspiration with plenty of native plants and wildlife on show or, for a human element, head to the Hume Indigenous Garden in nearby Westmeadows on Wednesday December 12, for a workshop on growing vegetables from cuttings.

The winner in each category will receive an environmental hamper and the chance to have their photographs featured in Hume City Council's promotional newsletters and on its website. An exhibition of the winning photos will also be displayed in Broadmeadows, as well as Craigieburn and Sudbury.

Printing photographs is a good way of adding art to the home without spending too much money and can add a personal touch to home decor. Printing companies can create large prints from digital photographs, which can then be framed. Images can also be added to items such as magnets, which could be given as Christmas gifts.
