St Leonards will receive a considerable increase of accessible parkland when the Lane Cove Council develops a new green space.
Early works for the $20 million development featuring a new park and plaza near St Leonards Station started in late 2021, and work recommenced on January 5th. The public park will feature elevated boardwalks, gardens and picnic and barbeque areas above the North Shore rail line. The rail line is one of Sydney's busiest routes, and St Leonards is experiencing rapid growth, increasing the need for accessible green spaces.
The park will occupy over 4,000 square metres and will have a foundation of 1.7-metre-thick material above the rail line. Walkways from St Leonards Station will give commuters easy access to the park, shops, offices and residential units. Canberra Avenue on the western side of the site will have a drop off zone and accessible entry points.
Work above the rail line will require the placement of a large crane, necessitating the closure of some roads and traffic redirection with signage present at affected intersections. Graphic design for signage indicating such traffic updates can improve readability and understanding of directions.
The council has consulted with the community throughout the planning process. Interested parties can view changes to traffic access, register to receive regular updates and view design information on the Lane Cove Council website.
Lane Cove Council estimates that construction will be completed by December 2022.
