Iconic North Sydney pool set for major upgrade

The North Sydney Olympic Pool, which has served the area, including nearby St Leonards, for 84 years, is set to be transformed, with work to begin at the end of March.

Icon SI has recently been appointed to renovate the site, and is set to expand and improve the centre's recreational facilities.

According to Mayor of North Sydney Jilly Gibson, the age of the facility has taken a toll on the grandstand, concourse and 50m pool, which have all deteriorated greatly. She said the redevelopment into a state-of-the-art leisure and fitness centre will ensure regular swimmers and others at the harbourside pool can enjoy what the complex has to offer for many years to come, and added:

“The redevelopment will also open the complex to new customers. We’ll have better swimming and play options for families, older people will be able to enjoy gentle exercise in warm water pools and we’ll be able to offer more aquatic and fitness classes and an expanded gymnasium."

Major recreational facilities such as this have often been featured in brochure printing campaigns that promote the local area.

The first few weeks of March will see the current pool decommissioned, as well as memorabilia and equipment removed prior to the start of construction. A budget of $63.9m has been allocated to the project. It covers everything from the design and consultation phases to preparation of the DA and construction.
