Wisconsin to build EV charging network

There is good news for Baraboo electric vehicle (EV) owners, as the state has recently instituted the Wisconsin Electric Vehicle Infrastructure plan that will use $78m provided by the federal Bipartisan Infrastructure Law to build a network of EV charging stations.

According to Craig Thompson, the Department of Transportation Secretary, the network, which will be accessible from the interstate highway system and will be located on key state highways, will permit EV owners to travel throughout Wisconsin with confidence. Thompson was quoted by Madison.com as saying:

“This is really a great opportunity for Wisconsin to be ready. We can benefit on the environmental side and on the economic side. It can be a win all the way around.”

In order to receive the almost $78.7m from the federal government, the state has to meet certain requirements. For instance, all of Wisconsin’s designated alternative fuel corridors and its interstate system need to be in compliance with federal guidelines. They must have fast-charging stations capable of charging four vehicles at a time at no more than 50-mile intervals and no more than a mile from an exit.

Wisconsin’s plan is for its state highway system to be 85% in compliance with the federal standards. Currently, of the state’s 306 non-Tesla charging stations, approximately half are close enough to designated alternative fuel corridor with only four of those up to the federal standards.
