The entire state requires a total of 30,000 people working at the polls. In normal years, most of those numbers are made up of seniors, but many of them have had to drop out this year because of this age group being more vulnerable to COVID-19.
Meagan Wolfe, the Wisconsin Elections Commission Administrator said that larger areas such as Milwaukee and Madison have plenty of volunteers, but more rural areas like Baraboo are falling short. According to Wolfe, the state needs must make sure that they it has plenty of reserve workers in case the first choices drop out.
The extra hands are also needed to help with the high number of absentee ballots, which are expected to be popular this year and require more detailed work. Opening the high number of Envelopes alone requires considerable manual labor.
Wolfe put out a call to get more volunteers to help with the election effort. She stated:
“I really believe in us as Wisconsinites, and that we can do this that we’re going to have enough poll workers. We need more workers than ever this year.”
Anybody who wants to be a poll worker can call their local clerks to see if they need help. Flyer printing could be used to help fill vacancies.
