Due to the retirement of the Baraboo Police department’s first canine officer, Whelen, and his human partner Mark Creighton, the city has been without an active Canine Program. However, that will change in the coming year.
Whelen and Mark Creighton, his handler, worked together from 2010. Together, they worked on drug investigation cases as well as locating at-risk persons who were lost. No doubt the police will be excited to have this resource once again at their disposal.
The canine program here is unique in that it is publicly funded through donations. Businesses such as Deppe Enterprises, Farm and Fleet of Baraboo, Hill Dale Vet, and Pulse Fitness have already pledged their support and special events are planned where Baraboo residents can show their support as well.
Banner printing services can be instrumental in ensuring strong turnouts for community fundraising events in support of causes like this one. This not only helps the originating organization and its projects, but also enriches the quality of life within the community.
The department hopes to have a new dog on staff as soon as late spring An initial cost of $15,000 has been given for a dog obtained from a nationally recognized kennel. The new canine officer will come fully trained in person tracking, narcotic detection, handler protection, article location and suspect apprehension.
